You may be familiar with the term “bilateral stimulation”, a term which is often recognized or associated with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy. Bilateral stimulation is achieved through back-and-forth rhythmic eye movements, auditory, or tactile means to activate the right and left hemispheres of the brain while processing thoughts, emotions, and memories.

Walk and Talk Therapy works in a similar fashion in which through bilateral stimulation, achieved by the back-and-forth movements of walking, we are activating both the logical and emotional parts of the brain opening the pathways for more effective thought processing and emotional connection and ultimately achieving a more cathartic experience. Walking while processing through thoughts and emotions offers up to a more natural pace of emotional movement while grounding the nervous system through being outdoors in the natural environment.

If you are interested in learning more about how Walk and Talk Therapy could be helpful for you, reach out to Brooke Martin Counseling. I am now offering Walk and Talk Therapy in the Dubuque community.
