Have you ever noticed at the end of a long work day when you leave the office, as you walk through the doors and out into the open air, you instantaneously experience a sense of freedom and release?
This is because our bodies and brains are hardwired to be in sync with the natural world around us rather than the artificial environments many of us tend to work in. Over time we have become estranged from our natural environment through technology and long hours spent indoors throughout the workweek. We busy ourselves with activities occurring mainly within the confines of four walls that we don't prioritize what our bodies and minds instinctively need to maintain proper balance.
Nature-based therapy (also referred to as eco-therapy, green therapy, horticulture therapy, and walk and talk therapy), works against the predominately sedentary lifestyle that has overtaken our society to incorporate physical activity and re-connection with the natural environment.
Nature-based therapy provides a refreshing alternative to the standard in office therapy appointments. It combines traditional talk therapy with movement in an outdoor setting where therapist and client can walk side-by-side and talk in a more natural, authentic way rather than sitting across from one another in a therapy room.
Just a few of the MANY benefits to nature-based therapy include increased sense of emotional balance and contentment, enhanced ability to stay in the present moment, heightened creativity and free flow thinking leading to greater ability to solve problems, opportunity to incorporate more physical exercise into your weekly routine, reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress, and can be helpful in gently assisting in the processing of grief.
